ASTM A193 Grade B7M Fasteners
ASTM A193 Grade B7M Fasteners
ASTM A193 Grade B7M is a high-strength alloy steel bolting specification designed for high-temperature and high-pressure service, with the "M" suffix denoting 100% hardness testing requirements and restricted hardness limits for enhanced quality assurance.
Material Composition & Properties:
Base Material: Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (AISI 4140/4142 or equivalent), quenched and tempered
Tensile Strength: Minimum 100 ksi (690 MPa)
Yield Strength: Minimum 80 ksi (550 MPa)
Hardness: 235 HBW maximum (B7M-specific restriction, versus 321 HBW for standard B7)
Temperature Range: Service from -100°F to +1000°F (-73°C to +538°C)
The "M" Designation Significance:
The B7M grade mandates 100% hardness testing on every fastener (not just sampling), with a lower maximum hardness cap. This ensures:
Superior uniformity and reduced susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement
Enhanced performance in sour gas (H₂S) environments per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156
Greater reliability in critical pressure-boundary applications
Common Fastener Types:Stud bolts, heavy hex bolts, threaded rods, nuts (typically paired with ASTM A194 Grade 2HM nuts), and custom-engineered fasteners
Primary Applications:
Petrochemical and refinery pressure vessels and heat exchangers
Valve and flange connections in high-pressure piping systems
Offshore drilling and subsea equipment exposed to corrosive hydrocarbons
Power generation boilers and turbine assemblies
Sour service environments where NACE compliance is mandatory
Certification:
Full material test reports (MTRs) including chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and hardness verification required for each production lot.
