410 Stainless Steel Pipe

Short Description:

410 stainless steel is a commonly used martensitic stainless steel whose main components are iron, carbon, chromium and a small amount of other elements.

Product Details

The 410 Stainless Steel Pipe is a hardenable, martensitic stainless steel that represents the foundation of the 400-series alloys. Characterized by its high chromium content (approximately 11.5–13.5%) and relatively low carbon content, this grade is uniquely designed to deliver a balance of moderate corrosion resistance, excellent wear resistance, and good mechanical properties achieved through heat treatment. Unlike austenitic stainless steels like 304 or 316, 410 is magnetic in all conditions and can be hardened via quenching and tempering, making it a versatile choice for applications requiring both strength and a degree of rust resistance.

Manufactured in accordance with standards such as ASTM A268 (Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Ferritic Stainless Steel Tubing for General Service) and ASTM A511 (Standard Specification for Seamless Stainless Steel Mechanical Tubing), 410 pipes are typically produced through a seamless process. This involves hot-working a billet and then cold-drawing it to final dimensions, resulting in a pipe with good structural integrity suitable for machining and pressure applications.

The key advantage of 410 stainless steel pipe lies in its heat-treatable nature. In the annealed (softened) condition, it offers good machinability. Once heat-treated (hardened and tempered), it achieves high tensile strength, hardness (up to HRC 40+), and excellent resistance to abrasion and erosion. However, its corrosion resistance is significantly lower than that of austenitic or duplex grades; it performs adequately in mild atmospheres, fresh water, and some chemicals, but is susceptible to rusting in marine or chloride-rich environments. It also offers good oxidation resistance up to approximately 650°C (1200°F).

Common applications leverage the alloy's hard, wear-resistant surface. It is widely used for petroleum refinery equipment, steam turbine blades, gas turbine parts, high-strength machine parts (like bolts and nuts), and pump and valve components. In summary, the 410 Stainless Steel Pipe is the industry-standard material for components that must endure abrasive wear and moderate corrosion while maintaining high structural strength under dynamic loads.
