DIN 17175 Seamless Steel Tubes for Elevated Temperatures

DIN 17175 is a German industrial standard that specifies the technical delivery conditions for seamless steel tubes suitable for elevated temperature service. Developed by Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), this standard has been widely recognized across Europe and internationally for applications involving high-pressure and high-temperature environments, particularly in power generation, chemical processing, and boiler manufacturing.

Key Characteristics

  • Manufacturing Process: Tubes are produced by hot rolling or cold drawing from killed steel ingots or continuous cast billets. The seamless construction ensures uniform wall thickness and eliminates weld-related weaknesses, critical for pressure-containing applications.

  • Heat Treatment: Depending on the grade, tubes may be supplied in normalized, normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered conditions. Proper heat treatment is essential to achieve the specified mechanical properties and microstructural stability at operating temperatures.

  • Mechanical Properties at Room and Elevated Temperatures: DIN 17175 specifies minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation values at room temperature, along with proof stress values at elevated temperatures. For example, 15Mo3 requires minimum tensile strength of 450–600 MPa at room temperature, with a 0.2% proof stress of 180 MPa at 500°C.

  • Creep Resistance: A defining feature of DIN 17175 grades is their resistance to creep deformation under sustained load at high temperatures. The molybdenum and chromium additions in alloy grades significantly improve long-term structural stability compared to plain carbon steels.

Applications

DIN 17175 seamless tubes are essential components in:

  • Power Generation: Superheater tubes, reheater tubes, steam headers, and boiler water walls in fossil fuel and biomass power plants.

  • Petrochemical and Refining: Process heaters, catalytic reforming units, and high-temperature reactor piping.

  • Chemical Industry: High-pressure synthesis loops, heat exchangers, and furnace tubes.

  • Waste Heat Recovery Systems: Tubing in exhaust gas boilers and thermal oxidizers.

Dimensional and Technical Specifications

  • Outer Diameter Range: Typically 10.2 mm to 711 mm

  • Wall Thickness Range: 1.5 mm to 100 mm

  • Length: Random or fixed lengths as agreed

  • Tolerance: Strict dimensional tolerances per DIN 17175 Table 1, ensuring interchangeability and fit-up quality

Relationship to European Standards

DIN 17175 has been largely superseded by the harmonized European standard EN 10216-2, which covers seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes with specified elevated temperature properties. Many DIN 17175 grades have direct EN equivalents (e.g., 15Mo3 corresponds to 16Mo3 in EN 10216-2). However, DIN 17175 remains widely referenced in legacy systems, project specifications, and markets where German engineering standards continue to be preferred.
